Before You Book That Conference: What No One Tells You (But Should)
by Kim The SME | KimUnity Soulutions
Have you ever gone to a conference expecting to be inspired, to learn something new, maybe even grow your brand only to come home falling into the same mindset, motion, and momentum you left with? Maybe even networked, exchanged contact information, and never maintained that connection?
Last year, I attended two major conferences and I packed big expectations. I brought my merch, business cards, conversation starter cards, and even a microphone to capture content. I brought my family with me to help based on my overly-high expectations. I just knew I was ready.
What I didn’t realize was that I was trying to do everything and ended up missing out on a few things.
I went in wanting to sell merchandise, attend every session, book podcast guests, initiate meaningful conversations, and make deep connections, but what I quickly learned is that conferences require focus. It's so important to walk in with clear intentions whether that’s to learn, network, or sell. Otherwise, you may leave overwhelmed and disappointed.
There are several lessons that I learned and want to share with you. One of my biggest lessons? Clarity is everything. If you’re trying to sell and sit in workshops at the same time, one of those will suffer. If you’re planning to network but don’t even have your elevator pitch ready, you might miss the biggest moment that could change everything.
The next lesson is that some of the best moments won’t occur on the main stage. They’ll happen in elevators, hallways, or quiet in-between spaces. I had a beautiful connection with a fellow leader that never would’ve happened if I hadn’t stayed at the venue, remained open, and been prepared to share who I am and what I do.
Now let’s talk about bringing others with you. I brought my family, and while I loved having them there, I learned this: Not everyone can go with you to every part of your purpose. My daughter, with all the love in the world, pushed me to walk up to a keynote speaker before I was ready. I wasn’t grounded, and the interaction felt awkward and forced. That moment taught me the value of protecting your peace and knowing when you need to walk alone.
I also realized that VIP tickets aren’t just about status, they’re about access. If you’re ready for the next level, don’t be afraid to invest in it. Sitting at the table with more experienced leaders changed the game for me.
And finally, once you get home, don’t just file away the notes and business cards. Follow up and apply what you learned. It’s not about collecting information, it’s about implementing transformation.
Look, I made some mistakes: forgot to prioritize, overpacked my schedule, let nerves get the best of me, but I also grew. I stretched. I learned. I want you to take these lessons with you so you don’t have to learn them the hard way.
Before you book your next conference, ask yourself: What do I really want from this?
And more importantly: Am I ready to give what this moment requires?
Your turn:
What’s a lesson you’ve learned from a conference experience?
Was there a moment that helped you grow in ways you didn’t expect?
