Behind the Smile: The Struggle is Real and Rarely Realized

Have you ever looked at a picture of yourself smiling and thought, “If only they knew…”?

Welcome back to another vulnerable, powerful episode of the KimUnity Soulutions Podcast, where we turn workplace challenges into real-world solutions. I’m Kim the SME, the Speaker of My Experiences—, and today I’m pulling back the curtain.

We live in a world of snapshots, curated lives, highlight reels, and polished images, but let’s get honest: The struggle is real... and rarely realized.

What Are You Really Going Through?

You show up to work on time, post the perfect photo, smile through the Zoom meetings, but underneath it all, maybe you're barely holding it together.

You’re not alone.

Most people are fighting silent battles, carrying unseen burdens, managing stress that never makes it to their feed. As I reeled in a massive fish on a recent family fishing trip (my first catch ever!), I looked strong and accomplished in the photo. But the real story? I struggled to get that fish on the boat. The pole twisted, my balance faltered...I mean, I was in a real battle!

That photo didn’t show the struggle behind the smile.

Everyone Is Dealing with Something

In the workplace and in life, we often make assumptions based on surface-level impressions. That coworker who didn’t say good morning? They might be juggling with a medical crisis with a parent or fighting to keep their household together. That friend who stopped showing up to group chats? Maybe they’re navigating unexpected expenses or unemployment.

I’m currently living this: part of the sandwich generation, raising children while caring for aging parents out of state. Between surprise septic repairs, skyrocketing medical costs, and the emotional weight of long-distance caregiving, it’s a lot. I share this not for pity. I share it because someone needs to hear they’re not alone.

🧘🏾♀️ Soulutions Start with Grace

This episode is a reminder: Extend grace. In the office, in your family, in your friend group, in general.

  • That person who seemed distracted? They’re managing something heavy.

  • That coworker who walked by without speaking? They may have so much on their mind that they didn't even see you through their pain.

  • That colleague who’s short with you? Their silence may be grief, not attitude.

If we can work across cultures, ages, titles, and beliefs for a shared goal at work—we can do that in life, too.

Let’s lead with empathy.

🙏🏽 A Call to Compassion (and Action)

For the first time, I’m sharing a personal need publicly. My family is navigating a major health and housing challenge for my parents, and I’ve created a GoFundMe to help cover urgent, medically necessary home repairs. This isn’t easy to ask, but transparency builds connection and healing.

🔄 Reflect, Share, Extend

As we close, I ask you:

Who’s been acting different lately?

What might be going on that you can’t see?

How can you shift from judgment to compassion?
