I Almost Explained Myself Until I Caught Myself
Recently, I had to really pause and evaluate the action I was about to take.
I had gone through an experience where, on the surface, it probably looked like I didn’t show up, like I changed my mind, or even like I had ill feelings. In reality, my body was in pain and I couldn’t move, so I made a decision that I needed to make for myself.
Yet even in that truth, I felt this pull… this urge to reach out to everyone and explain why.
Not because anyone asked.
Not because anyone accused me.
Just because I didn’t want to be misunderstood.
That’s where I had to catch myself
I had to ask myself, “Ok, what are you doing right now?” "Why and for whom?".
It's not like anything had actually happened. No one questioned me. No one came to me for an explanation. Everything I was preparing to say was in response to a story I created in my own mind.
I had to pause and think about how often many of us do this in our lives. How often we build explanations for situations that don’t even exist yet. How much energy we give to protecting our image instead of trusting our truth.
There’s a difference between communication and over-explaining.
One is rooted in clarity. The other is rooted in fear.
We have to take the time to sit and feel the difference.
This experience also made me reflect on where that habit comes from. For many of us, it’s tied to moments where our character was questioned, where we felt misunderstood, where we had to defend who we were just to be seen clearly.
That stays with us.
It shows up in new spaces, new relationships, new opportunities… even when it doesn’t belong there.
As I've told myself before in other instances, this is not that.
That’s what I had to remind myself.
Everything doesn’t require a response. Every assumption doesn’t deserve our energy. Every perception doesn’t need our correction.
At some point, we have to trust that who we’ve shown ourselves to be is enough.
When people know our character, they don’t need constant explanations. They have a history to reference. They have consistency to lean on.
If they don’t ask, there’s nothing to chase.
That’s where the shift happens and the self-created tension releases.
Choosing to pause instead of prove.
Choosing to trust instead of explain.
Choosing to move forward instead of staying stuck in imagined conversations.
It’s the moment we reclaim our time, our energy, and our peace.
If this is something you've been sitting with, if you’ve ever felt the need to over-explain just to feel understood, this episode is for you.
