Loud and Wrong: When Your Way Isn't 'The Way'
Have you ever been so certain about something that you couldn’t imagine another way?
Most of us have had those moments. We’ve planned the steps, pictured the outcome, and felt completely confident about the direction were headed in.
It made perfect sense to us and then someone with experience steps in and says, “That’s not how it works.”
That moment can be humbling.
In this episode, I reflect on a real-life experience of stepping into something new and already having an entire vision mapped out only to have a professional with decades of experience explain how I would need to make some changes in order reach my desired destination.
At first, it was hard to grasp.
Like many of us would do, the questions started coming. What about this? What about that? Could it still work this way? The questions weren’t about proving anyone wrong. They were about understanding.
After sitting with the conversation and hearing different perspectives, it became clear that the destination was still possible, but the route needed to change.
That realization made me think about how we can sometimes stay committed to a path even after we learn it may not be the best one.
Sometimes it’s ego. We don’t want to admit we might be wrong.
Sometimes it’s attachment. We’ve built an identity around the way we’ve always done things.
Sometimes it’s past success. If something worked before, we naturally assume it will work again.
And sometimes it’s simply the time, energy, and money we’ve already invested.
Having a growth mindset teaches us to release strongholds so we can still accomplish the goal.
One of the most powerful takeaways from this conversation is recognizing that correction can actually be a blessing. When someone with knowledge and experience takes the time to share a better path, it's a positive and not a negative; it’s guidance.
We don’t have to abandon the dream; we just need to change the vehicle that gets us there.
Where in your life do you need to pause, reevaluate, and remain open to wisdom that could move you closer to your goal?
