The Blessing Next Door: Why What You're Searching For Is Already Near
It's amazing how one simple event or action sparks something much deeper in my mind. Today, I want to tell you a story about a donut. Stay with me, because there's a lesson in it.
I had a craving for a glazed donut, but not just any donut. The one that's fluffy and squeezes back when you press it, the kind my grandmother used to bring home.
My usual spot wasn't as good as it used to be, so I went searching online for something better and found a place with great reviews. The next morning, I went and it did not disappoint. When I told my husband where I found it, he couldn't believe that the donut shop was right next door to the convenience store he visits weekly. He's walked past it for years and never once noticed it was there.
When I reflected on this moment later that day, it made me realize what all we overlook and is so close to us.
It brought me back to the years I spent as a senior accountant, doing the work only to watch the promotion go to someone hired from outside. Not because I lacked the knowledge or the relationships, but because the organization was not looking at me. They were looking past me, the same way my husband walked past that donut shop every single week.
We do this to people all the time. We get so used to seeing someone every single day that we stop seeing who they are becoming. We remember who they were five years ago, ten years ago, and we miss the person standing in front of us now, the one who has been studying, practicing, and growing quietly while we were not paying attention.
I believe most of us are reaching up when we should be reaching out. We look toward the person on the stage instead of the person sitting right beside us, the one who already knows somebody, who already has what we need, who is already capable of helping us take the next step.
Your blessing rarely looks the way you expect it to. It is not always dressed as an opportunity. Sometimes it looks like a coworker you have overlooked, a family member you have written off, or a neighbor you nod at but never really talk to.
So, this week, I want you to look again at the people who are already close to you. Ask a real question.
