The Cost of Knowing Your Worth and Why It's Worth It Anyway
Have you ever walked into a room knowing you were the most prepared, the most equipped, maybe even the most gifted? How did you respond? Do you feel like you have to shrink or do you own it?
This week on the KimUnity Soulutions Podcast, I explored a hard truth: the moment you become aware of your own value, the world doesn’t always applaud. Sometimes, it resists. Sometimes, it punishes.
This is why I say that there is a cost to knowing your worth, and that cost is often highest in the spaces where your gift is needed the most.
The Unspoken Rules of Confidence
It’s strange how people are often quick to celebrate your talent… until you acknowledge it yourself. Praise feels safe when it comes from others. But self-affirmation? That’s where people get uncomfortable.
In professional spaces especially, confidence can be mistaken for arrogance. Excellence is welcomed—until it starts challenging the status quo. The same people who benefit from your brilliance may become the ones who try to minimize it.
This creates a dilemma that many of us know too well: Do I keep shining and risk being labeled, or do I dim my light to keep the peace?
Shine!
Playing small doesn’t protect your peace or your purpose.
Your gift is meant to be seen, felt, and used. It’s not about bragging or needing validation, it’s about showing up in the fullness of who you are, even when the environment doesn’t affirm it.
Whether you’re in a boardroom, a classroom, or on the frontlines, your confidence is not a threat. It’s an asset. And, when the system isn't ready for your shine, that’s not your cue to shrink, it’s your reminder to stand even taller.
I'm speaking from experience. Even when you don't shrink, you're expected to. In this episode, I shared several of my experiences. What I've learned is that sometimes, the resistance isn’t rejection...it’s redirection. A repositioning. Sometimes it's preparation and a setup for something far greater than what you’re leaving behind.
It's Worth It
When you know your worth, you will be tested. You might be skipped over, talked about, or even penalized, but holding on to your truth is never wasted effort. What feels like a setback now often becomes the reason you're elevated later.
Your worth is not determined by how others respond to it; it is in spite of how others respond to it.
What's your experience?
Have you ever faced the cost of knowing your worth? What did it teach you? We want to hear your story. This is how we learn from others and have more options on how to apply it to our own lives. Help others by sharing yours.
