What We're Getting Wrong About Leadership

There are conversations that inform us… and then there are conversations that quietly challenge how we’ve been seeing things all along.

This was one of those conversations for me.

As I sat with Hon. Raymond “Fleet” Kemp, Sr., I wasn’t just listening to leadership principles. I was being invited to look at leadership differently. Not from the top down, not from titles or structure, but from the place where people actually experience it.

And, honestly, while new to many, it was so familiar to me because this is exactly what I have been speaking about in all of my podcasts...leading where you're at.

Many have been taught to look up when it comes to leadership, and to believe leadership begins at the top...that vision, direction, and strategy are the primary drivers of what people experience.

While those things matter, leadership isn’t just what is created…it’s what is felt.

And that feeling, the climate, is shaped in the everyday interactions we don’t always stop to examine.

It’s in how we speak.
How we respond.
How present we are.
How accessible we choose to be.

As we talked through the difference between culture and climate, Raymond explained that while culture may be defined at the top, climate is lived at the frontline.

This means that no matter how strong the vision is, 
if the daily experience doesn’t align with it, people will feel the gap.

I can so attest to this!

We also leaned into access, open door policies, and what presence and visibility truly mean.

In all, leadership is not something we step into later.

It’s something we are already practicing every single day.

In how we show up.
In how we treat people.
In what we create around us.

So, ask yourself this:

What are people actually experiencing in my presence?
