You Don't Need Permission, You Need Provision

I drove into that parking lot telling myself something I had said to myself a hundred times before. From this moment on, I'm going to do this right. I didn't know what the message at that event would be, but when I heard it, it landed exactly where I needed it to.

The topic was permission.  To be honest with you, my first reaction was almost defensive...I'm grown, I'm not waiting for anybody's permission. But, if you sit with yourself long enough, if you actually get to the root of why you haven't taken that step yet, why the dream is still sitting on a shelf, you might find something quieter than defiance. You might find that you are, in fact, waiting. Not for opportunity. For approval.

Here is what I have come to understand. Somebody told you it wasn't going to work. Maybe they said the economy is bad, or you are too close to retirement to start over, or you are so good at the thing you already do that you should just stay there. Sometimes it is not even another person's voice. Sometimes it is your own. What are you telling yourself that is keeping you frozen?

I described it to myself like a game of freeze tag. You are stuck in place until somebody comes along and taps you, and only then are you free to take a few steps, until the next tap freezes you again. That is not a way to live an entire life. Somebody else's hand should not be the thing that decides when you get to move.

Here is the part I needed to hear the most. You already have the idea. That is vision. And the resources, the timing, the people, the doors, those are already being provided. That is provision. When you already have vision and provision, you do not need anyone else's permission. You need to trust what you already have.

I also want to offer you some grace here. The people telling you to wait usually are not trying to hurt you. Maybe they are worried about your reputation, your finances, your safety, or they simply do not want you repeating a mistake they made. Their concern is real, but it is not your compass. Your job is to know who you are and whose you are, and to follow the path that was set for you, not the one that feels safest to the person watching you from the sidelines.

Now, I am asking you the same question I asked myself in that parking lot. What have you given away that you did not even realize was no longer in your control? Go take it back. You are free to try. You are free to succeed. And you were never actually waiting on anyone but yourself.
